- Define Computer Science as a broad field of problem-solving.
- Understand the difference between Computer Science and Programming.
What is Computer Science?
Before we start typing code, let's answer a big question: What is Computer Science?
Most people think it's just about programming (or "coding"). While programming is a huge part of itāand the main focus of this courseāit's really a much bigger field. It's not just about the tool; it's about what you build with it.

An Analogy: Cooking vs. Knives
Think of it like this:
- Cooking is the entire art and science of creating food. It involves creativity, chemistry, planning, and technique.
- Using a knife is a fundamental skill you need to be a cook, but knowing how to use a knife doesn't make you a chef.
Computer Science is Cooking. Programming is Using a Knife.
The Science of Problem-Solving
At its heart, Computer Science is a creative field where we apply logic and computation to solve problems. It involves many different areas, including:
- Hardware: The physical parts of a computer (CPU, memory, circuit boards).
- Software: The programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do. (This is our focus!)
- Networks: How computers connect to each other to share information (like the internet).
- Data: How we store, organize, and process information efficiently.
- Algorithms: The step-by-step "recipes" we design to solve a specific problem.
In ICS3U, we are going to master the skill of programming in Python. This is our "knife skill." By learning to program, we gain the power to design algorithms, manage data, and create useful software, opening up the entire world of computer science.
