Introduction to Computer Science/6.1 Environmental Stewardship

6.1 Environmental Stewardship

🎯 Learning Goals for This Page
  • Define "E-Waste" and explain why it is a global problem.
  • Identify strategies for reducing the environmental impact of computing (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).
  • Reflect on your own habits regarding technology consumption.

The Hidden Cost of Technology

We love our devices. New phones, faster laptops, and powerful graphics cards are exciting. But have you ever thought about where they go when we're done with them? This is the issue of Electronic Waste (E-Waste).

What is E-Waste?

E-waste refers to discarded electronic devices. It is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. Electronics often contain:

  • Valuable Materials: Gold, copper, and rare earth metals that are energy-intensive to mine.
  • Toxic Substances: Lead, mercury, and cadmium that can leak into soil and water if not disposed of properly.

Visualizing the Problem

This short video explains the lifecycle of our electronics and the concept of "Planned Obsolescence"—the idea that devices are designed to break or become outdated quickly.

Note

What Can We Do?

As computer scientists and consumers, we have a role to play:

  • Reduce: Do you really need the newest phone every year? Extending the life of a device by just one year makes a huge difference.
  • Reuse: Can your old computer be donated to a school or charity? Can it be repaired instead of replaced?
  • Recycle: Never throw electronics in the trash. Take them to certified e-waste recycling depots where the metals can be recovered safely.
Discussion Activity

Head over to the "Unit 6: E-Waste Discussion" forum. Post a quick response to this question: "Think about the last electronic device you or your family stopped using. What happened to it? Knowing what you know now, what might you do differently next time?"
