With Great Power...
Computer Science isn't just about code; it's about the impact that code has on the world. Today, the biggest topic in tech is Artificial Intelligence (AI). We use it in this class to help us code, but how does it actually work, and what are the risks?
The Risk of Bias
AI models learn from data created by humans. Since humans have biases (prejudices), the AI often learns those biases too. This can lead to software that treats people unfairly based on their race, gender, or location.
Many early facial recognition systems were trained mostly on photos of light-skinned men. As a result, the software struggled to recognize women and people with darker skin tones. This is algorithmic bias.
Visual Learners: AI and Ethics
This Code.org video features experts explaining how machine learning works and why "ethics" is now a required skill for programmers.
Deepfakes and Truth
Another emerging issue is Deepfakes—AI-generated video or audio that looks real but isn't. As programmers, we have a responsibility to build tools that verify truth rather than spread misinformation.
As you build your Culminating Activity, think about the user. Are you designing something that is fair and accessible to everyone? Ethics isn't an extra step; it's part of good design.
